Through the reading of four to six poems, John J. Guiney Yallop will share some of his own journey as a gay man through his own identities within and without the communities he has experienced throughout his life. The poems are intended to evoke rather than settle, to question rather than answer, to open up spaces of learning rather than close with limiting conclusions. As well as having spent twelve years as a student in one of Canada's schooling systems (Newfoundland and Labrador), I worked as an out gay elementary school teacher for almost two decades in another of Canada's schooling systems (Ontario). In my Master of Education research (Guiney, J. J. , 2002, School life for gays: A critical study through story), I used my own stories and the stories of two other participants to conduct a narrative inquiry into how gays experience school. For my PhD Dissertation, I intend to use poetry as method, process, and representation to explore the emotional landscape of a gay person's identities within/without communities. A poet who has published in arts and academic publications, I am interested in how poetry can allow us to access emotional data and enable us to communicate evocatively to diverse audiences.
